It's very likely that this concept was designed after developers discovered Soap shoes while on a trip to San Francisco (for game inspiration) as the products were being launched around the same time that Sonic Adventure 2 was in development. These plastic bits would allow the wearer to slide down rails or "grind" on them much like a skateboarder or rollerblader.Īnyone who played Sonic Adventure 2 knows how prominent grinding is throughout the adventure, with both Sonic and Shadow having the ability to slide effortlessly along rails. The unique footwear was designed to be as "normal and comfortable" as traditional sneakers (the actual prototype was a Nike) while also offering a set of plastic liners fitted around the outside of the shoe.
